Lance’s Sobriety Journey with Alcohol & Rapé (Hapé)

Lance reached out to me from Hawaii in May 2022 with a desire to clean up his health and close relationships. Alcohol and rapé (hapé) were his go-to “medicines.” They began as allies but eventually became detrimental to his life and relationships.

Little did he know that clearing his dependancies on these substances would take him through a journey of intimacy with himself, his wife (now former), his son, and his housemates.

When Lance stopped eroding his own boundaries (e.g. using substances against his better judgement), the people around him couldn’t erode his boundaries anymore. By closing the doors of trickery within himself, he closed the doors of trickery with others around him. Over time, his boundaries with himself and his relationships grew stronger. He learned how to better manage stress and communicate his feelings, needs, and wants in healthy ways.

It’s always so rewarding for me to support clients like Lance who are tired of playing the old games of self-deception and who are ready to commit to a new level of awareness and responsibility in their lives. Of course, the journey is never as smooth and linear as we would want and bumps and setbacks are common.

It’s not about perfection, it’s about a willingness to lean in and re-commit again and again. Onward we go!
